Into the Darkness!
After thinking about, working on, and tinkering with Ex Umbra for the last two to three months, it's finally ready for release!
So, what is Ex Umbra? To put it simply, it is a playable dungeon-generator.
If you've played Ex Novo, the playable city-generator from Sharkbomb then you already know roughly how this works. If you haven't, then let me explain: Ex Umbra is a game that you can play alone or with friends. It has a lot in common with collaborative creative exercises. You'll take turns being inspired by various creative prompts. Together you'll tell the story of the dungeon as you'll drawing it onto an actual map.
However what makes Ex Umbra different is its explicit goal. After a session you will have generated an interesting and playable dungeon. Playable in that sense meaning something you can use as setting for a session of your favorite role-playing game.
As a long-time RPG game master I've drifted more and more away from prep and towards the impulsive creativity at the table. The creative collaboration is what makes RPGs so exciting to me. And Ex Umbra is my attempt at making prep more fun, by making it a fun and collaborative experience. But of course if you want to keep all things a secret, you can play it solo as prep just for yourself.
I hope that you'll enjoy exploring and mapping your own fictional dungeons as much as I do. I mean, who doesn't love a good map?
And if you do delve, you can share your results with me. Post them in the forums or use the #exumbra hashtag!
